A wise man knows he controls nothing outside himself." - Marcus Aurelius
A wise person recognises that they have no real control over external events, other people, outcomes, reputation, health, or circumstances—only over their own mind, judgments, attitudes, and actions. You can control your opinions, values, desires, aversions, and how you respond to what happens. But you cannot control the external aspects of life, such as the weather, other people’s behaviour, politics, fame, fortune, death, etc..
Marcus Aurelius teaches us that most human suffering comes from trying to control things outside our power and getting frustrated when we fail. True freedom, inner peace, and strength come from focusing only on what is truly yours to control — your own character and mindset. This is one of the core ideas of Stoicism: accept what you cannot change, and master what you can. By letting go of the illusion of external control, you gain genuine tranquility and resilience.
